Sanatana Dharma – Shradh

The ultimate aim of all human beings is salvation. It is the nature of Kaliyug to attract people towards Adharm (non-righteousness) and Kaliyug has also offered us multitude of sadhus and sants, Gurus to bring us back on the path of righteousness. While all paths lead to the same destination of salvation, Our Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar is walking us on the house holder’s spiritual path, showing us that by fulfilling one’s duty as a householder, one can also work to attain Moksha. I never stop marveling at the ease with which He navigates us towards our ultimate good.

An opportunity to experience His compassion, love and care presented itself as we decided to offer Shradh (Prayers for our ancestors liberation), Tarpan (Offering black sesame seeds with water so that the departed souls lose all attachment towards worldly relationships and emotions) and Pindadaan ( Offering food for the hungry soul) in our Bodh Gaya Ashram, Bihar state, Northeast India. (Visit Bodhgaya ashram contact here) With the blessings of Gurudev , our Vaidic Dharma Sansthan (VDS) Pandits perform Shradh in the ashram Yagyashala.

Talking to the Pandit, we expressed our concern that our practices in south may differ from that of Northeast region. He put our concerns to rest by assuring they perform ‘Dakshin Vidhi’ as well as ‘Kashi vidhi’.

The ceremony lasted for nearly four hours. Everything was done with attention to details. We offered Shradh, Tarpan and Pindadaan  to 100+ departed souls, ancestors, relatives, friends, others, including a pet I had lost way back in 70s!

The evening was for Vishnusahasranam chanting and Narayana homa for purification. Feeling totally grateful for having fulfilled our duty, we proceeded to a blissful satsang and a beautiful video presentation of Gurudev where He spoke about one can steal a bulb but not the energy, the source that makes a bulb light up! What an analogy! The simplicity of our Master amazes me! He was referring to the people who rob temples of precious idols.

Next morning was Long Kriya and visit to Gayaji and Maha Bodhi temple.

Our departure on Monday morning was blessed with Rudra Puja.

The experience in totality is inexpressible as always. It was our long time wish to offer shradh in Gayaji but our Master ensured it would be done with His blessings in our own ashram. It was worth the wait. Because, without  Him where will I be?!

Dear readers, I will be writing in detail about many interesting stories about Gayaji in my forthcoming blog posts. Stay tuned here!

Jai Gurudev!
