Hi, It is me, “Time”. I am sure you have heard me tick, or you have heard me ring or beep and wake you up every morning. You have heard me chime on the hour and every quarter. You have seen me as blinking dots in this electronic age. But, perhaps you have never heard me in print. I thought I’d talk to you in print on line this time.
I am amazed at the immense measures used to define me. Your dictionary says, “Time” is continuous existence- the past, the present and the future or a definite period. You have described me in terms of ages, eras, rotations, revolutions and cycles. The fossils have helped you understand past time. Your observations of the celestial sun and moon helped you devise your solar and lunar calendar. However dear friend, everything you create is never near the absolute truth, for I can never be contained.
In the year 2000, you had toyed with the idea of, having 30 days for the month of February , to make up for the many seconds lost in the last 400 years. So here is “Time defying Time”. You also worried about the Y2K bug in the same year as the century changed in your accounting programmes. Recently you thought your world would end in December 2012. But I marched on with a belly full of laughter and Joy with more surprises for you.
I have read your many words of wisdom about me. I certainly liked most of them. Here are a few of my choice for you.
“Time was-Time shall be-drain the glass- but where in time is Now?”– John Quincy Adams, The hour glass.
“Time goes, you say? Ah! No. Alas, Time stays, me go.” – Austin Dobson, The paradox of Time.
“Backward turn backward, O Time, in your flight, Make me a child again just for tonight.” – Elizabeth A. Allen.- Rock me to sleep.
Then there are the proverbs like, “Time and tide waits for no man”. “Every tick of the clock takes you closer to your grave”. Here you call death, as time(kaal).
So then, what is “ time” ? “I am the space between two events / things. Hence like space I am an element”. Life happens in Time and Space. Therefore dear friend, “Me”, the “Time, – is our Life”. “How many minutes, hours and days have we spent our life being happy from within? Those are the only moments we have really lived life”- Sri Sri Ravi Shankar.
Some years ago, I got a message that read, “Life does not consist of holding on to good cards, but in playing a poor hand well”. So let us play our time well, with worthy deeds. Let not our time be etched in history as a period of senseless violence on senseless issues like race, religion, caste, creed, colour, hatred, greed, anger, lust, desires, pride, power and obsession. Let us make our lives worthy for the good of the human race and all other forms of life that share this planet earth, our only Home. Here is an opportunity, brought to you by the Art of Living Foundation. The call for a better India is in every heart. So let us use our time to Volunteer for A Better India. Please visit www.vfabi.org and be inspired. Be a part of this historic time and contribute towards a happy, progressive and prosperous India.
“So dear friend, as the sun is losing its mass, and the moon it’s speed and the earth it’s life, make ‘your life- your clock to watch’, with seconds of good thoughts, minutes of good words and hours of good deeds. You will certainly like the face of your clock- your life”. Good Bye.
